Governor Bredesen Promotes CoverKids Week in Tennessee

Governor Bredesen attended a CoverKids enrollment event Thursday held at Jefferson Street Baptist Church in Nashville. Representatives of CoverKids and Monroe Carrell, Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt were on hand to enroll children in the comprehensive health insurance program as part of ongoing CoverKids Week events in Tennessee.

"No child in Tennessee should be without health insurance, but parents do need to enroll their children in CoverKids to participate in the program," said Bredesen. "Providing children with quality health coverage is one of the best investments we can make in their future, so I encourage all Tennessee parents to take advantage of this opportunity."

In addition to enrollment events being held across the state, CoverKids representatives will be answering questions about the program during a live call-in event from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Central on Saturday, September 6. During "Call-In For Coverage," parents can call toll free 1-866-576-0028 to find out if their children qualify and to get help with the CoverKids application process. When they call, parents will need to have their annual income information and the Social Security Number for each child they want to enroll in CoverKids.

A family of four earning $53,000 a year or less may qualify for CoverKids. Once enrolled, these families pay no monthly premiums for coverage. Doctor visits range from $5 to $15, generic medications cost as little as $5 and there are no co-pays for immunizations, routine well-exams, labs or x-rays. Families above the household income limit can pay $225 a month for each child they want to enroll in CoverKids. CoverKids insurance does not have deductibles.
